Look again at that dot. That’s here, that’s home that’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Does this photograph make you understand what you can influence and do in the time you have on this pale blue dot?

Humanism

THINK FOR YOURSELF
ACT FOR EVERYONE

Humanists shape their own lives in the here and this is the only life we have. We make sense of the world through logic, reason, and evidence, and always seek to treat those around us with warmth, understanding, and respect.

That’s it and it’s what makes us human, it is how we have evolved since we left the plains of Africa and walked to other places throughout this world.

Throughout recorded history, people have believed that this life is the only life we have, that the universe is a natural phenomenon, with no supernatural side, and that we can live ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity.

We can trust the scientific method when it comes to understanding how the universe works and rejects the idea of the supernatural or ‘magic’ as Jefferson called it.

We can make ethical decisions based on reason, empathy, and a concern for human beings and other sentient animals. Think about the last part and how we are changing in our perception of sentient and what it means.

I believe that there is no afterlife and this is it. Get on with it, enjoy it and do the best you can in the time you have and seek happiness in this life and help others to do the same. If you want to know more go to https://humanism.org.uk/
